During the past few months I have facilitated several team development training sessions. Teamwork is a favorite topic of mine and one I have a lot of passion for. World class teams, in my opinion, are something that can be achieved as long as the right ingredients are present and consistently used. Lately, I have recognized an interesting pattern in these team development sessions - one or more individuals will approach me during a break with the same question. Their question goes something like this, “I am on this team that just doesn’t quite reach its potential. What can I do about it?”

REACHING FOR GLORY
As the Summer Olympics Games recently came to a close. I reflected back on the games. I remember that during the opening ceremonies, contingents from each represented country walked into the stadium ready to take on the worlds best. Some countries had only a small number of competitors, while others a very large number. Do you remember the vast number of athletes there were inside the stadium after they had all filed in and found their place to join in the ceremony? To me, it was like a sea of happy faces - each with his/her own dream of Olympic glory. For some, merely attending the Olympic Games and representing their country was glory enough. For others, winning a medal was their only measure of success. According to the Olympic website, a total of 958 medals were awarded during the Summer Games. As there are only three medals awarded in each event, I wondered about the vast number of athletes, among the 10,500 competing, who returned home without winning a medal.

The summer Olympics, which just ended, reminded me of a personal experience during the 2001 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Since this was in our hometown, my wife and I really wanted to go to an Olympic event, but we didn’t have a lot of money. Tickets for medal rounds of any event were very expensive, so we purchased tickets to go see the men’s figure skating event as it was one of the more affordable tickets. Obviously my wife won the debate about which event to go see! During this preliminary round, we were able to watch about 24 skaters from different countries. Some skaters had fantastic routines and it was easy to see who would be the finals. Their ability and skill were noticeably better than others, even to the untrained eye. While this event was not my first choice to see, I did gain a greater appreciation for the talents of others, especially since I knew I couldn’t skate very well. It made me think about how much we truly rely on others’ skills, talents, and expertise to accomplish tasks and especially to make good things become great.

Any really good manager should constantly be trying to improve their self. There are four basic tips that if you will incorporate into your leadership, will make you a more effective leader and also make you a key player in a future leadership training.
The first thing you should take note of is to “let go”. Trust your employees to do their jobs correctly and finish their tasks. Do not attempt to micro manage your employees, or you will end up working some very long hours and eventually burn yourself out in the process.

Getting the message to your team members may not require as much athletic ability as it was for the native peoples in the frozen north, but your intended purpose needs just as much proficiency and dedication.
Every spring, Alaska hosts the Arctic Winter Games. Similar to the Olympics, thousands of athletes participate. However, these athletes are the native peoples from the frozen north, the Yukon, Canada, the Russian province of Yamal, Greenland, and the Sami people of Norway and Finland. The skills of these athletes are quite different from the skills of the modern Olympian as the Arctic Winter Games grew out of native survival skills.
