True to form, Chris...customer service may be in danger for some companies, the foolish ones.

I think there is another part to this though. How many times do you call a company just to get the automated ramble and think to yourself.."I just want to talk to a person"?

Companies who automate their customer service or ship it out to India are in danger of losing customers, sales, and branding. Perhaps even more than those that have lousy customer service.

There is an emotional context to purchasing most anything and if customer service loses that emotional context they the companies customers my lose their “Good Feelings” about the company.

You are joking, right? Have you used a self-checkout lately? They've hired all sorts of new staff to stand next to them for when the damn thing doesn't work... : )

I find this article interesting, and I was kind of thinking the same thing a couple of weeks ago when I had to return something to the library. These days, to take something out, you go over to one of the many scanners, put your card under it, then scan the item you want. It seems odd when there's someone sitting there at the desk who, for that moment, isn't doing anything else except looking around, to have to do that, but if you approach them, they send you to one of the scanners. I know it's supposed to be for our benefit, but it doesn't feel like that most of the time.
